New Competition Format Used in RIAC and Swedish Cup

This will be a short post with just a few links for anyone interested in how the new competition format might work.

2013 has just started and with it all rule changes come into play. The main one, and the one that will affect competitions from now on is the new competition format. As all of you are probably aware of by this point, finals will from now on start from zero and of a knock-out style. For the top two shooters this means 20 shots and a maximum of 218 p (decimals included). Considering what elite shooters are currently scoring in finals, a more reasonable score is closer to 210 p (105*2) to take the gold. There’s also a change in the qualification round with decimals being used instead of just the full score. This is not mandatory for everyone but will be tested at the international level through 2013 and then evaluated. This means the new maximum will be 654 p for men and 436 p for women. But again, a reasonable maximum score is closer to 106 p in average, or 636 and 424 respectively.

So, in case you are interested, I know of two competitions that have used the new format so far. More is to come since the season is only a few days old, but so far it’s RIAC and Swedish Cup. RIAC ended December 14th and used the new Finals format even though it was still 2012. Swedish Cup ended today and used the whole new program with decimals in the qualification round and the new finals format.

In summary, winning final scores seems to be on the 208 p level which is 10.4 in average. This number could go up slightly considering these competitions don’t include everybody in the top, but is at the same time a reasonable top score seen in many finals. For the qualification round the average score is, not surprisingly, slightly higher. The top score from Swedish Cup was 10.47 for men and 10.45 for women. Most final shooters did however end up with a 10.35 average. I assume this number will go up and close in on that of the top score seen here in competitions with more elite shooters participating.

Coming up next are several posts about how final scores have changed over the years and how the ranking list might change with the switch to starting finals from zero.

Edit: Pannonia Trophy in Austria did also use the new format, results here. Scores were comparable with the other competitions mentioned above but final scores slightly lower (mostly in the 10.3 p region with an occasional 208 p). In case you’re interested in seeing more results, upcoming competitions are Plzen and Ruse, starting Jan 11th.
